School Bathroom Damaged By Fire

BY MATTHEW MORIARTY: STAFF WRITER

A small fire broke out in a boys' bathroom at Academy Heights Elementary School in Taylortown May 2.

Pinehurst firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the fire within a few minutes. Commander Ricky Lea said that the fire caused very little damage.

Firefighters received the call at 2:18 p.m. and were at the school by 2:20 p.m., Lea said. They saw light smoke coming from the building. School employees led them to the bathroom, and they quickly put it out. Firefighters called in to report that the blaze was under control at 2:30 p.m.

They determined that the fire started in a paper towel dispenser. It spread to the wall and ceiling but did not breach either, Lea said. The fire is still under investigation by the county fire marshal and the Moore County Sheriff's Department.
